Stockist Spotlight: Typical Type

When did Typical Type get started as a business and what were the main ideas behind setting the business up?

"Our adventure started for us - Darren a fully qualified joiner and Megan, a fully qualified Mum in the summer of 2013. We are based between the lovely old town of Lancaster and the glorious seaside town of Morecambe. We work from home and like to keep the team small so we can ensure each piece gets the attention it needs.Typical Type was born from many years of left over pieces of wood and MDF being made into letters and shapes during quiet moments in the workshop. Dotted all around our house are little letters and tokens of love, and we decided it was high time to spread the joy to others, and so started our small adventure.

Then in October 2013 we were then asked if we could supply BIG lit letters for weddings by a photographer friend. When we say BIG, we really mean BIG. One frantic week later the leap was made from 20 cm letters to 6 foot high ones. Our first wedding fair saw us take 6 bookings and we knew we were on the right path. Now we are the proud suppliers of large lit letters to many, many weddings, parties and celebrations and our range has grown to include new lighting and other items related to throwing a fabulous party."

Can you tell us what inspires you as a designer?
Honesty, integrity, originality. We think long and hard about how things will work at a wedding or party, how they fit in to the day, how they photograph, how they look and feel, how they make our customers feel. Sometimes we see things that we like and know we can improve upon, other times we start totally from scratch. For us it's about producing the most beautiful objects at the highest quality.

Are you able to commission work for clients at Typical Type?

Sorry, you can't commission work from us, but we do like to hear ideas and regularly ask our customers if there are new items they would like to see in our collection. We then look at their ideas and see which ones we like, which are the most popular and see what we can come up with!

Could you share with us some of your favourite pieces of your work? What makes them your top picks?

We BIG LOVE all of our pieces, but current favourites are the festoon lighting - they make me think little fairies are bobbing around - and BIG HEART. I also really like BIG MIRROR, it's opulent and a real addition to anyone's day.

Do you have any projects in the pipeline that you would like to share with us?

We have lots of new items coming up over winter which we are really excited about launching next Spring. Currently there is a huge star being made in the warehouse, measuring over 6 foot high!

What are you hoping to achieve in 2015?
In 2015 we are hoping to carry on with the success we have had in 2014. Mainly though we are just really keen to make sure all of our customers are happy with the service they receive, they are the most important part of our business.

Do you have any words of wisdom for anyone who is thinking of setting up their own business in the wedding industry?

Yes, be prepared to work hard! It's not about luck, or having the right product at the right time, or being in the 'right place'. Granted, these things help, but it is about pure hard work: dragging your tired and aching post-season body out of bed to attend that wedding fair on a cold and wet November morning, replying to brides in the evenings and weekends as that is when they are on line, smiling and being cheerful and remembering that although it's your gazillionth wedding it is still the couples first and therefore should be treated with as much love and enthusiasm as it deserves. There are no 'quick fixes', no answers as to how to make a successful business, but the rewards are amazing when you do work out how you want to run your business. Oh, and good luck!
