GIDDY AS A KIPPER


Please could you give a brief introduction on yourself and your company to my readers who may not have come across you before…


I'm Heidi and together with my partner & business partner Steve, we run homeware & gift company Giddy Kipper (at the moment!). We launched Giddy Kipper in 2004 at The Country Living Spring Fair and continued to exhibit for another 4 years at the show. We joined online retail store Notonthehighstreet.com in 2006 and the business grew quickly.

We initially made gifts for children, lots of coastal items for the home, wooden signs, hearts, stars, birds for example. Our products beagn appearing in National home magazines and newspapers like Coast, Country Living, Homes & Antiques, Ideal Home, and Country Homes & Interiors.All of our products are handmade and hand painted and we often take bespoke and large orders for events and shops.

                                         

How did your business get started and what were the ideas behind it?

Our business started out of necessity...both myself and Steve had moved back from Manchester and London respectively due to family circumstances. As a couple we decided we wanted to start a creative business and although Steve had no former woodwork experience, took to it naturally! I had an art degree and wanted to put this creativity to some practical use.

We began making small pieces of furniture and gifts but then moved into weddings as we had so many requests for venue decorations, table decorations, personalised gifts for the bride and groom, pageboy and flower girl gifts etc. 

                                           

Why did you decide to enter the wedding industry?

Weddings became our most popular area and our products were then featured in Weddings Ideas Magazine, Perfect Wedding, Wedding magazine, Brides and You & Your Wedding.In 2011 we were nominated for a Wedding Ideas Award for Best Special Touches and made it to the final 5. We were beaten by Confetti but not a bad start for such a small business! In 2012, we were nominated again and this time we won!! We were completely shocked but totally thrilled to have won against so many other amazing wedding companies. In 2013, we won for the 2nd year and couldn't quite believe it!!


                                         

Congratulations on winning the “Best Special Touches Award” at Wedding Ideas Award 2013. Do you have any advice for our brides to be on choosing their wedding d├ęcor and including those little details that guests will remember?

As for choosing your decorations and special touches, these days there is so much choice for any budget. We like to keep ours as affordable as possible - not every couple has a never-ending pot of money! Lots of savvy couples are buying wedding favours with a budget-friendly double use. Placecard holders on the day can be taken home to use as photo holders. Personalised tags, stars or hearts used as place settings or tied to napkins or chair-backs are a sweet memento of the day

                                       

Could you explain more about your bespoke service and the steps that it involves?


Our bespoke service has been proving very popular as we are able to make and paint items to match a specific theme, or make props, thank you signs to use in photographs, large signs for backdrops at a venue, place name holders etc. We love discussing specific details with couples to make sure they have something truly unique to them.
                                             

As well as being an award winning wedding supplier – you are also parents to two young children – do you have any advice for our readers on achieving a good work-life balance?
It can be very hard running a business and especially if you're also a parent! We have two small boys (aged 7 and 3) so getting the work/life balance right can be very tricky!! We are very lucky to have fabulous Grandparents to help out with childcare (painting, packing & deliveries too sometimes!!) You do what you can..the boys always come first so there are plenty of very late nights to contend with (coffee helps A LOT!) 

                                          

 
Can you tell us what inspires you as a designer?


The inspiration for our designs comes from all sorts of sources. A certain colour or pattern can trigger off a design, a book , a TV show, magazine article (I love magazines!!)...anything! I am a complete pinterest addict and the beautiful photos on the site are also a brilliant source of inspiration. I try to keep up to date with trend forecasts, themes that are just emerging which I think will really take off and certain colours that are appearing more frequently. We like to make our designs a little bit different, a bit quirky..so we listen and take everything in then add our own personal style. 


                                         

Are there any future projects in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about? 

This year we have taken a step back to re-assess and revamp the business to decide exactly where we now want to be heading. We've decided to scale down Giddy Kipper and are about to launch our brand new website as Giddy Weddings & Events! We're very excited about our new site and the changes to the business - we can now concentrate on more of the products we love and help more happy couples!
